Almost all staff and faculty members require a desktop computer or laptop, and other desktop-level devices (e.g., printers, portable storage, peripheral devices, etc.)  to be productive. CSU desktop support services supports business continuity by providing a variety of supports including purchase recommendations, setup, maintenance, repair, replacement, and disposal of computers and devices.

All IT services require a robust, reliable, and scalable core infrastructure to develop, host, secure, and deliver the technologies that support these offerings. CSU core infrastructure services represents the hardware and services that underlie all other technologies. It is fundamental to nearly every service offering, data security, and data storage within the FHS.  Additionally, these services are directly responsible for providing connectivity to all users in the FHS.  All physical network connections and Wi-Fi services are managed and maintained as part of this infrastructure and are necessary for users to access the public Internet, the campus network, and associated resources.

About this service

FHS faculty, staff and students can connect to Wi-Fi as if they were on the main McMaster campus and behind the campus firewall.  Clients can connect to the hidden ‘SDATA2’ WIFI network at HHSC sites and the ‘MCM-DATA’ WIFI network at SJHH sites, using their McMaster credentials. You must request and be added into a security group managed by CSU before you will be able to connect.

Access is restricted to FHS faculty, staff, and students only.

How to access this service

To request access, please visit the Network & Infrastructure section of the MyCSU portal, choose ‘HHS SDATA2 Wireless Access Request’ and fill out the required information.

CSU provides a wide variety of support for classroom technologies across the FHS and its teaching partners. These include the room design, supporting curriculum delivery through training and in-session support, event scheduling with community partners, exam support, lecture archiving, room security, maintenance, and other services.

About this service

CSU supports the development and hosting of websites for FHS groups including the Faculty’s schools, departments, programs, research institutes & centres, administrative units, and labs.  This service is provided by the FHS web team, which includes dedicated resources from both CSU and FHS Communications. Based on the MacSites service and our partnership with MPS, this service ensures FHS websites are aligned with University and Faculty strategies, meet McMaster and government legislative requirements, and that McMasters assets on the public internet are appropriately secure.

REDCap Research Support Services are intended for McMaster Faculty of Health Science faculty and staff members solely to support the use of REDCap or referral to more appropriate tools for conducting McMaster research. The nature of the service varies from case to case, but includes elements such as:

1. Needs assessment (software evaluation, distribution methods, etc.)
2. Data assessment (privacy, PHI, security, etc.)
3. System provisioning (system setup, domain reservation, etc.)
4. REDCap admin user support (training, consultation, troubleshooting, etc.)
5. Security & backup (data backup, encryption, etc.)
6. Export & decommissioning (data export, retention, etc.)

Eligibility to access the service is decided on a case-by-case basis by Research Services in consultation with CSU.

The MedSIS 3-C software solution is a customized system designed to support the effective administrative processes within the Faculty of Health Sciences, specifically surrounding the needs of a School of Medicine. Our implementation of MedSIS within the FHS supports the unique needs of the School of Medicine including Letters of Good Standing (LOGS), Clinical Scheduling, Elective Placements, Competency Based Medical Education (CBME), Medical Trainee Days (MTD), etc.

In most cases, access to MedSIS is arranged at the department level for relevant staff.  For help and support with MedSIS issues please visit the MedSIS information site, where you can access information, training or open a help ticket request if required.

The FHS-DB is designed to meet the unique and essential needs of FHS.

The FHS-DB replaced MacFACTS/STAR to become a comprehensive database, and the new primary Record of Activity (ROA) solution, for the FHS.  The FHS-DB augments information stored in McMaster’s Mosaic system to:

• Streamline administrative processes and increase the efficiency and accuracy of data collection
• Provide information related to credited teaching contributions, personal information and academic appointments
• Facilitate better use of reporting for all members across the faculty

Microsoft SharePoint is a web-based collaboration system. It provides a secure place to store, organize, share, and access information from almost any device and all major web browsers.

The SharePoint provisioning service provides information and guidance around the use of SharePoint and helps FHS faculty and staff assess their needs and connect with alternate technologies if appropriate. The SharePoint Service is currently offered for all faculty and staff.

VRF allows McMaster users located within different hospitals to connect “as if they are on campus”. This allows access to resources and services located within the campus firewall or which require McMaster IP addresses. This technology exists on both the Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS) and St. Joseph’s Healthcare (SJHH) networks.

About this service

Many groups in the FHS require online systems to meet their administrative, education, and research needs.  A vital element in these systems is robust and secure servers; specialized networked computers which provide or ‘serve’ applications users computers and mobile devices (clients).  Using commercial software (VMWare) to virtualize servers, CSU can provision virtual servers to meet client’s needs.

The Virtual Server Hosting services provide ‘virtual’ network servers which share common hardware resources and housing for increased efficiency and cost savings. Some examples of these services include:

• Server infrastructure maintenance (repairs, upgrades, expansion)
• Server hosting & maintenance (provisioning, updating)
• Security services
• Data security & backup services
• Datacentre management (environmental control, security, access)

Virtual servers are managed through CSU but are considered a differentiated service and therefore are provided on a cost recovery basis.

About this service

The McMaster DeGroote School of Business and Faculties of Engineering, Health Sciences, Humanities, Science, and Social Sciences pooled their Adobe licensing requirements and entered into an agreement with Adobe. The ETLA agreement allows FHS/CSU to provision Adobe Creative Cloud Licenses https://www.adobe.com/ca/creativecloud.html at lower cost to FHS staff and faculty.

The current agreement runs from June 2021 – May 2024 and the cost of an ETLA license is $150 per year for a single user. Licenses can be purchased at any time on a prorated basis.
